Name: Laura Bird Hometown: Prospect, NC University: UNC-Pembroke Graduation Year: 2016 Major: Chemistry Pre-Health concentration How did you find MedServe? – I found MedServe through an email that the chemistry department chair sent to me. He specified that it might be something I'd be interested in doing. I also heard about it from my older sister's sorority sister. Why did you choose MedServe? – I initially pursued MedServe to obtain clinical hours towards applying for physician assistants school. It's more than clinical hours now. It's more personable. I love that MedServe targets rural underserved communities in North Carolina and highlights the rock star physicians that serve in those clinics. What’s your role at your host site? – I am working as a medical assistant and health coach. This includes running labs, drawing blood, obtaining vitals, checking patients out, discussing chronic illnesses with patients, helping patients set health goals, and helping wherever else needed within the realm of my skills. What are you hoping to gain from your MedServe experience? – I hope to gain experience and a solid base of knowledge for physician assistants school. I feel that MedServe offers this unique experience in that I will be part of a health care team and playing an active role in the patient's care. Where / how did your interest in health develop? – My interest in health started ever since I was small and played "doctor." I also had family members involved in healthcare. My aunt is a dentist and my friend's dad is a physician assistant. I realized my interest in health more so in high school. I took a class named Health Team Relations my junior and senior year. The class was taught by a nurse that transitioned from working in the hospital to teaching at the high school. I enjoyed learning the systems of the body. What are your plans after MedServe? – After MedServe I plan to attend physician assistants school; preferably at East Carolina University, UNC Chapel Hill, or Duke. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? – I see myself working in a clinic in a rural, underserved community as a physician assistant. Where do you see yourself 5 years after that? – I hope to practice in South Dakota on a reservation. My grandpa was from South Dakota and I have family there now.
