Blue Ridge Community Health Services
Blue Ridge Community Health Services is a Federally Qualified Health Center that prides itself in being healthcare built with the patient in mind. Under one roof, the practice provides family medicine, dentistry, pediatrics, pharmacy, and behavioral health. As an FQHC, the practice works with uninsured and underinsured patients. BRCHS was established in 1963 with migrant farm workers in mind. The practice is the nation's oldest migrant worker clinic. Since 2009, Blue Ridge Community Health Services has been able to provide all of their current services to both migrant workers and the community as a whole. The practice is also unique in their School-Based Health Centers which provide students with comprehensive nursing, medical, behavioral health, and nutrition.
The Fellow at Blue Ridge Community Health Services will join the team to promote community-based primary care as a limited-scope medical assistant and a community health worker/case manager. As a limited-scope medical assistant, the Fellow will learn invaluable clinical skills like preparing the EMR for a physician, conducting Depression Screenings, taking vitals, and vaccine administration, which will open up more time for the rest of the clinical staff. In the community health worker role, the Fellow will be working primarily with the substance abuse and pain management team. This will involve following-up with patients and connecting them to appropriate resources.
